- Slippery Elm Bark and Marshmallow Root contain mucilage, a chemical that when mixed with water, forms a slick gel. It coats the tongue, throat, stomach, and intestines and comforts them. They also include antioxidants, which aid in the relief of inflammatory bowel conditions.
- Comfrey has also been used by herbalists to fight diarrhea and other stomach problems. Allantoin and rosmarinic acid are chemical compounds found in the roots of comfrey and leaves of the comfrey plant. Allantoin promotes the formation of new skin cells, whereas rosmarinic acid reduces pain and inflammation.
- Fennel has been demonstrated to aid digestion by reducing intestinal irritation and eliminating microorganisms that generate gas.
- Gentian is used to treat digestive issues such as loss of appetite heartburn, bloating, and diarrhea
- Ginger Root has a naturally occurring component called gingerol which aids gastrointestinal motility or the speed with which food exits the stomach and moves through the digestive system. Ginger also promotes effective digestion, which means food doesn't sit in the gut as long. It also offers relief from nausea.
- Chamomile can improve digestion and relieve stomach discomfort.
- Goldenseal has been used for centuries to aid with digestion, ease upset stomachs, and fight bacteria.
- Burdock is a good source of inulin, a prebiotic fiber that helps with digestion and intestinal health.
- Mullein is an expectorant, which means it helps the body remove excess mucus by making coughing more productive and bringing up mucus that has accumulated in the chest, lungs and stomach. It also works as a demulcent. Demulcents generate a relaxing anti-inflammatory layer over mucous membranes, according to studies making it great for the stomach.
- Cayenne Pepper increases the formation of digestive fluid, sends digestive enzymes to the stomach, and protects the stomach from infection.
